I used to tell people that Tigers Jaw reminded me of a poppier Archers Of Loaf or a more punk version of Pavement…except with keyboards and a blatant disregard for apostrophes.

Looking back, I’m not sure that it really did the band any favors or truly conveyed how amazing its songs really are.  My point was simply that the five piece cranks out an extremely catchy, somewhat twisted brand of nostalgic indie rock that wouldn’t have been all that out of place in Chapel Hill circa 1992.  At the same time, Tigers Jaw injects its skewed pop masterpieces with a fiery punk energy and youthful enthusiasm that feels as fresh as an cool evening breeze in late July.  Comparing the band to contemporaries like Archers was my way of saying the quintet possess the intangibles that will make them just as relevant and exciting five years down the road as they are right now.

Of course, who gives a crap about intangibles?  You can’t hear intangibles.  I just know that Tigers Jaw tends to circumvent conventional  notions of what indie, pop and and punk should sound like while still keeping the proceedings high-energy, instantly engaging and incredibly infectious.  It’s an off-kilter, almost timeless approach to songwriting that warms our hearts to these young Scrantonites and makes the anticipation of whatever they do next that much more intense.  As it stands, Tigers Jaw’s catalog of unforgettable hits is quickly growing.
